Winter in the Great Fatra

Winter kingdom on the Fatra ridge
For me, the Great Fatra is a paradise for winter landscape photography. The ridge is dotted with trees that can stand out beautifully in winter and create a great atmosphere. The special sunrises here are simply incredible and in good conditions you can see the Little Fatra and the West Tatras. If you like untouched landscapes, wild nature and a lot of adventure, this is the workshop for you :)

Characteristics of the workshop

The workshop is intended primarily for photographers and tourists interested in landscape photography. You can be a complete beginner who wants to explore the possibilities of your camera, or you can be an advanced photographer who would like to understand composition methods or light work even more deeply. The course is intended for both groups of photographers. In addition, together we will learn how to use auxiliary equipment for field photography more effectively (tripod, tripod tips, cable release, filters), we will explain the importance of planning and something I call "systematic" photography. Over beer and food, we will later talk more about basic and advanced photo editing (RAW, exposure blending, time blending, focus stacking, etc.).

Advantages of the workshop

  • Wild nature and unobstructed views
  • Veľká Fatra has the most snow of the Slovak mountains by default.
  • We will be staying right on the ridge, so there is no need to hike up several times a weekend or spend money on the cable car.
  • without the need for long hikes or transfers
  • good mood and willingness to explain and thus pass on as much knowledge and experience as possible
  • pleasant accommodation where we always spend a relaxing evening taking photos
  • I have filters from the Czech manufacturer VFFoto available for rental for participants (polarizing and ND filters).

Note:
Winter conditions are unpredictable and this must be taken into account. However, when planning the date, I based my personal experience from recent years.
Anyway, snow is a factor that is really difficult to plan for.

Necessary photo equipment

  • ideally a digital SLR or mirrorless camera
  • basic wide-angle lens and telephoto lens
  • solid tripod
  • filters (polarizing, gradient, gray) - not a necessity but definitely an advantage
  • spare camera battery and memory cards :)
  • quality winter clothing
  • snowshoes or snowshoes in case of ice
  • Snowshoes or alpine skis are an advantage (of course you can do it without them, but it's slower and more demanding)

Accommodation during the workshop

  • we will be accommodated directly on the ridge of the Veľká Fatra
  • Half board will be included in the accommodation
  • double rooms
  • Access to the accommodation is possible by car. In case of snow, chains or a 4x4 drive are required. In any case, I can take you up there too.
